Turkey Trots and Holiday Runs

In my area, there has to be about 12 different Turkey Trots today. From the little 5k with 100 runners to the more popular run at the Portland Zoo, runners are out today! Part of the fun with these runs is that they are perfect for the whole family. They tend to be less competitive and more about family and giving. How can you have a name like, “Turkey Trot” and expect people to take it seriously? No, this is a day of fun runs. Many of the runs even ask for non-perishable food donations rather than charge an entrance fee.

After the turkey trots, we’ll soon get to the holiday fun runs. Again, there are a ton and they range in size. This time of year, runners are just hoping the weather cooperates and it’s just freezing cold. The alternative here in the Pacific Northwest includes buckets of rain and wind. That’s just not that fun to deal with. Weather permitting, or weather appropriate running gear permitting, holiday fun runs are always a good time. Like the turkey trots, they’re fun for the entire family and often ask for donations.

There are even some New Year’s 5k’s to kick off the new year right. I don’t know of any specific runs in my area yet, but I think it would be fun to run at midnight. If I can stay awake that late…

It is nice that we have a lot of races to choose from up here in the PNW. I think I’m going to do the Jingle Bell Run 5K in December in Seattle. But it’s just so cold!!!!!
