These are the words I repeat to myself when I’m running, at least when I’m running well. So simple, yet powerful – run strong. I’m sitting here writing this blog post after finishing a great run. I’m still dripping with sweat and I’m thrilled that I ran strong. I know the phrase is nothing new. There is even a coaching and training group called Run Strong in Colorado and a book by Kevin Beck. Although I admit, I’ve never read it.
To me, “run strong” is my reminder to control my form, use by arms, pick up my legs, look forward, and use the strength of my core. These two ordinary words provide me with an unparalleled mindset. I can push myself and feel stronger as more sweat drips down my face. I certainly can’t claim “run fast” as my mantra. That just isn’t going to happen, but I can run strong, regardless of my speed.
Not every run is a strong run. I have many, many runs with my girlfriends while we are chattering away. “Run strong” doesn’t usually surface during those runs and I don’t mind a bit. I love that I have all kinds of runs and I think it actually makes my strong runs even better, almost exhilarating.
I used to think that mantras, affirmations, chants, whatever you want to call them, were exclusive to the elite and it was futile to try to incorporate them into the everyday runner’s routine. Boy, was I totally wrong. If you’re new to running, find something that hits home with you, a phrase that makes you want to try harder. You’ll be so glad you did and you will surely feel the difference in your running.

Well done! You have voiced my *exact* sentiments. I’m sidelined by shin splints right now and can’t believe that I actually MISS running.
The temptation to medicate, freeze them and get in at least a couple of miles was pretty serious. *sigh*
But I didn’t – and that’s a kind of “strong”, too, right?
Love this!! Great blog!!!
